UNDULATION : Reincarnation
About seven or eight years ago, in mid-summer, I picked up this driftwood at a certain beach in Kamakura. It was lying in the middle of the beach, half of its body buried in the sand. The bark, burnt by the midsummer sun, was white and dry, and when I picked it up, the sand that had gotten into the nooks and crannies fluttered about. I picked it up and stared at its odd shape for a while. The shape of the two striking horns and the degree to which it was bent seemed too beautiful to be true, and although I am not in the habit of collecting driftwood, the white, dry object rolled into the car on the way home in a very natural way.
THE FUSION OF ORGANIC AND INORGANIC AS EXPRESSION. THIS IS A MAJOR THEME THAT IS RELATED TO THE FUNDAMENTAL ORIGIN OF "UNDULATION," AND THE CENTER OF THIS IMAGE IS UNDOUBTEDLY THE EXISTENCE OF THIS DRIFTWOOD, WHICH HAS ALWAYS BEEN BY MY SIDE FOR A LONG TIME. THE ONE-OF-A-KIND FORM OF THIS DRIFTWOOD, WHICH WAS BORN IN NATURE, SURVIVED FOR A LONG TIME, AND HAS SINCE BEEN TRANSFORMED BY OVERCOMING NUMEROUS ORDEALS, IS BOTH TOO SOLITARY AND SUBLIME.
[Reincarnation : Reincarnation ] : I will continue to create works with the inevitability that I feel in my heart, facing the organic relics that have finished their activity of life with a heart of compassion. I will continue to create works with the inevitability that I feel in my heart, as if I were facing God and praying deeply to him.
