Dragon Pair / Black Dragon & Silver Dragon

2 Symbols

This work is an attempt to transform the symbolism of the dragon—rooted in the depths of Japan’s spiritual culture—into a form of modern abstract expression. What is particularly significant here is not the dragon as a single image, but rather the fact that the two entities, the “Black Dragon” and the “Silver Dragon,” are paired and arranged as a diptych. In Shinto, the dragon is a being that governs the flow of water and ki, and is regarded as a symbol of the invisible cycles of nature itself. The Black Dragon embodies the abyss and the source—that is, the tranquility of the earth and the night—while the Silver Dragon symbolizes light, transformation, and the energy ascending toward the heavens. The two are not in opposition but in a complementary relationship; like yin and yang, they depend on one another to maintain the balance of the world.

The significance of presenting this work as a diptych lies in its ability to visualize this very “relationship.” It expresses a cycle of energy that cannot exist in isolation—that is, a wholeness that emerges only when two separate parts resonate with one another. By moving back and forth between the two screens, viewers will experience the interplay of opposing elements such as stillness and motion, interior and exterior, and gravity and buoyancy.

Furthermore, the differences in coloration between the two works are highly suggestive. The composition of *Black Dragon* features a deep, immersive black as its foundation, within which multilayered fluctuations of color are embedded. This is not mere darkness; rather, it evokes a “state of undifferentiation” that holds within it countless possibilities. In contrast, the composition of “Silver Dragon” possesses a lightness and fluidity that seems to reflect light; the colors are more diffuse, giving the impression of opening out into space. While this contrast suggests a dualistic structure—such as the material and the immaterial, or the latent and the manifest—it is by no means a division. Rather, the two are continuous, implying a cyclical process in which the brilliance of silver is born from the depths of black, and the expansion of silver returns once again to black.

The “waves” and “fluctuations” evoked by the concept of “UNDULATION” are presented in this work not merely as visual effects, but as the very essence of existence itself. The dragon is not a fixed form but a constantly shifting current; by capturing this current as two distinct phases, this work can be regarded as a contemporary interpretation of the Japanese view of nature.
